If August 2, 2026 is your deadline for high-risk systems, work backward. Here is the roadmap I walk clients through. Plan for 8 to 10 months of work if you have a single high-risk system, longer if you have multiple or build your own foundation models.

Step 1: AI system inventory (month 1)

Pull together every AI system your business uses or provides. Include third-party tools, embedded features, and internal scripts. For each, document what it does, what data it processes, which decisions it influences, and which EU persons it touches. This is the foundation document everything else depends on.

Step 2: Risk classification (months 1 to 2)

Apply Annex III to each system. Identify whether your business is a provider (you built or substantially modified the system) or a deployer (you use someone else’s system in a professional context). Document the rationale. Articles 6(3) and 11 require this documentation; it is also your defense if a national authority later disputes your classification.

Step 3: Prohibited practices audit (month 2)

This deadline already passed.
